* Days 1 & 2 make extensive use of erosion areas where climb is difficult to measure. For Day 1 no estimates have been made. For Day 2 climb given is an estimate only.
While care has been taken to set the easy and moderate courses within the guidelines, these areas are complex (especially in the old mining terrain) and often has limited visibility and a plethora of similar features. As it is the beginning of the year some competitors will be 'stepping up' for both technical difficulty and type of terrain.
Therefore it is a good time to remind all competitors of the OT policy that whistles are compulsory.
COURSE PLANNERS’ NOTES
Day 1
The area is in complex mining terrain with little climb except in and out of erosion gullies. Vegetation is often thicker than shown and there is an unmapped confusion of tracks in the open area south of Argonaut road. The approximate course of a quad bike track has been added to the map but there are other tracks and lots of rubbish which are not shown.
Competitors on courses 7 and 8 will be running on Argonaut Road (against the traffic) for at least one leg. If the creeks have water in them Course 9 competitors will get very wet feet.
Courses have been set in a compact area with many changes of direction and for the longer courses, several crossovers. Check control codes carefully.
Debbie
Day 2
The courses make extensive use of the ‘moonscape’, although the longer courses will extend beyond that with spur – gully areas, maybe a bit of granite and other erosion sites. It’s been a while since I’ve set there and several points need to be noted:
- There are extensive and confusing vehicle tracks through the gravel / clay areas in the erosion areas, so proceed with caution. The main tracks have been mapped, but take care to read your map and check your compass when on a track.
- Vegetation has changed somewhat in places. Where some of the larger trees have fallen (leaving plenty of litter on the ground in places) there has been an increase in undergrowth.
For Courses 8 & 9, the start is 150m along Argonaut Road to the west. Please report to the tent when you are ready to start and an official will accompany you and start you. Both courses cross Argonaut Road. Please take notice of the warning signs. Some legs and tracks that might be difficult to follow will be taped with blue and yellow tapes. Taped legs are shown on the control descriptions.
My main hint for the day: plan ahead!
Enjoy!
John
Day 3
The terrain is generally open eucalypt with scattered granite. Some forest has been fairly recently logged where the heaps of logging debris have been mapped as thickets. There are patches of she-oak, with more limited visibility, overlaying areas of complex tin mining. All hard courses will spend time in the complex area.
All courses will cross Argonaut Road – please take care.
Taped routes will be marked with yellow and blue tapes.
Chris
CONTROL DESCRIPTIONS
Control descriptions will be available at the start. They will also be included on the map for Day 1 & 3 and some courses on Day 2
Descriptions will be in international symbols for Courses 1 – 6, while both international and English control descriptions will be available for Course 7, and English versions for Courses 8 & 9.

The customary registration sheets will be used will be used – i.e. you select your own start times. On some of the days registration for some courses will be combined.
Allow time for your walk to the start.
All days have two minute start intervals.
Please follow the directions of the start team on the day. After you enter the first start box you will be able to collect your control descriptions. Please be at your start at least 6 minutes before your nominated start time.
SI Start units will be used at the start. On the start signal please pick up your map and proceed to the start units (and ‘punch’) before looking at your map. Follow the tapes to the start triangle.

CATERING
There will be a bbq operating at the event on Sunday and Monday. Monies raised go to the Juniors’ travel funds.
EVOC BBQ
The traditional BBQ, hosted by EVOC, will be held on the Saturday evening at Binnalong Bay from about 5.30 pm. at the picnic shelter (just past the tennis courts). Last year EVOC reluctantly abandoned the fully catered BBQ. It is now a fully BYO everything BBQ. Please try and avoid using disposable plates etc – let’s keep things as environmentally friendly as possible.

The OT Dinnerand AGM will be held on Sunday 10th March 2013 at the RSL, Quail Street, St Helens.
Meals will need to be ordered between 6 and 6:30pm. Orders close at 6:30pm.
