Orienteering is a fun sport which combines running or walking with map reading so it is a health-promoting activity which also develops important life skills. It is suitable for persons of all ages and all levels of physical ability.
The Orienteering Corporate Challenge was first introduced in Hobart 10 years ago and has been run successfully since then. For the last two years the schools series has been run concurrently with the Corporate Challenge and in 2012 a Primary Schools competition was added. Each week during the series three courses are offered ranging from a beginners course of less than 2 km to a course for more experienced orienteers of approximately 4 km.
The series is open to anyone. Students compete for individual and school points while the Corporate Challenge is open to corporate teams of three or more competitors who can compete individually or together and on the same course or different courses. Competitors in all classes can take part at lunch time with courses open from12.00 midday or after work with the last starts being 6.00 pm.
The locations are close to Hobart and utilise novice-friendly terrain such as suburban parkland.
All participants in events conducted by Orienteering Tasmania and its affiliated clubs are required to become members. There are two categories of membership, either as a full member or as a casual member. Further details and access to online membership are available on our About Membership page under the Membership menu item. The cost of participation is $10 per person per event or $5 for students with discounts for full members.
In the autumn 2013 series we are offering week 1 as an introductory lead-in to the series with additional assistance for newcomers. The competition will then take the form of the best 4 results from the following 5 weeks.
This year Orienteering Tasmania is again happy to offer a liaison service. If you are interested in promoting the series to your students or staff we can allocate a contact person who can visit the school or organisation to give a briefing to students or staff on what orienteering entails, meet and assist partricipants at events and ensure results are forwarded to the organisation after events.
Points are awarded to all competitors and there are perpetual trophies for outright and handicap team winners. If you have any queries feel free to contact the organizer Bert Elson at development@tasorienteering.asn.au Ph 6234 2991 or 0415 844 591
