OST points and Excellence points are awarded to participants in the Orienteering Series Tasmania events. These points are used to determine the winners of major annual trophies. They have now been computed up to OST5.

At the end of the year, OST points winners are determined in each competition class. The highest final scores out of all classes determines the male and female Tasmanian Orienteers of the Year. After OST5 Paul Enkelaar leads the men and Jan Hardy holds a maximum score in the women, closely followed by Val Brammall. Zali McComb is a high-scoring junior. Bass Burgess and Jan Hardy were the 2016 winners.

Excellence points compare performances over all ages and genders, being based on age/gender corrected kilometre rates. World Masters silver medallist Cathy McComb has just taken the lead from Janet Bush. The first male is Bernard Walker, coming in at 6th, with perfect scores in the only two events he has entered so far. Christine Brown won the 2016 Individual Excellence Trophy, with Mikayla Cooper the close runner-up.

Take a look. These competitions add a quirky and revealing dimension to the statewide series. The points tables plus details of the calculations, awards and trophies can be found in the Results section of the OT website, or via these links: OST and Excellence. Most of the workings are provided in the Excellence points spreadsheet for those who like to see for themselves. Send queries to stats@tasorienteering.asn.au
