4.  Event Series Information:  OST 7

5.  About This Event:
This is the seventh event in ‘Orienteering Series Tasmania’ – it is a standard Long Course event.

The courses traverse the undulating terrain through mostly very pleasant runnable bush with some areas of plantation forest. Rock detail and some minor mining features throw in an extra challenge; the area is crisscrossed by tracks which can be very useful, but can also be confusing to the unwary.  In places there are knee-high scratchy bushes, or taller wattles that may slow you down, so read your map carefully if you wish to avoid it! It is a lovely area of Tasmania and our hosts (Bob & Angie Gee & Robbie Walker) are glad to share their farms and surrounding views with us.

6.  Where Is The Start Area?*
Travel to Avoca on the A4 Esk Highway. Turn SW onto Arthur Street, follow this road (after 260m it changes to Royal George Road) for ~17km towards Royal George.

Turn south onto William Road (GPS S41.821731, E147.889615) and travel for 2.2km following signs to the parking/assembly area. Please travel carefully on Willliam Road as you may meet runners on their course. The start is ~250m easy walk from the assembly area.

13.  Information for Newcomers
Newcomers are encouraged to come along and give bush orienteering a try.
Wear comfortable clothing and foot wear suitable for walking or running; bring warm clothes and wet weather gear in case the weather is inclement. Long pants are a good idea if you plan on doing a course that takes you off tracks and through the bush. When you arrive at the event come to the registration tent and let the organisers know you are ‘new’; an experienced member will help you through the registration, start and event procedure. Feast on the BBQ provided by the Junior Squad (fund-raising for the school & state team) or bring your own picnic. General information for newcomers is available on the website under Get Involved

14.  Who are the Course Planners and Course Controllers
David Marshall is Course Planner, Christine Marshall is Course Controller and Kylee Gluskie is assisting with organising the event.

15.  Which Map Is Being Used?
St Pauls Far East;  Course 1 & 2 will use 1:15,000 map scale, all other courses will use 1:10,000 map scale. All maps use a 5m contour interval.

16.  What Else Do I Need To Know?
All participants in events conducted by Orienteering Tasmania and its affiliated clubs are required to register. There are two categories of registration, either as a full member or as a casual member. Further details are available on our About Membership page; or the helpful organisers in the registration tent will assist you.

As Orienteering Tasmania events are often conducted on private property we have a blanket policy of not permitting dogs at our events. Please leave your dog at home if going orienteering.
