The Board of Orienteering Tasmania met after the event at Stringy Bark Gully and the following is a summary of decisions reached.
- To be covered by insurance, anyone conducting an orienteering activity, which is not listed in our Events Programme, must make sure their activity is listed in Eventor. If you don’t do this you are not covered. Please make sure that Ian Rathbone is informed (in advance) of your activity. Eventor has a facility for the entry of club activities (other than the normal events) and this is where the information about other activities will be stored. You can do this yourself.
- Negotiations with Parks and Wildlife are continuing with the aim of obtaining an annual agreement about use of PWS land. It is unlikely that this agreement will be completed in the near future so people organising events on PWS land should continue to obtain permission in the usual way for the time being.
- OT remains in a sound financial position but there will be major expenditure this year on mapping and on development.
- OT is developing plans to take advantage of the Federal Government’s Sporting Schools Programme which will fund schools to “purchase” sporting activities from sporting organisations. Packages of activities that can be “sold” to schools need to be prepared and Orienteering Australia has done some initial work in this area. OT is planning to contract a person to prepare our offerings as soon as possible so that we are ready when the programme gets under way in July. (See advertisement in last week’s eBulletin.)
- The Sporting Schools programme requires people to be qualified coaches so we will need people to undertake the training programmes to be offered to become Level 0 and Level 1 coaches. This would be particularly suited to Uni students (over the age of 18) wishing to earn some income without having to work at Maccas.
- The Board approved the acquisition of some additional equipment for Pathfinders Club to enable them to conduct their events.
- The Board noted the appointment of Jan Hardy, Judy Davis and Kylee Gluskie as members of the State Selection Panel. The Tasmanian Schools Team officials were also noted. They are Gayle West (Manager), Kylee Gluskie (Assistant Manager), Mike Dowling (Coach), Mark West (Assistant Coach). We are all indebted to the work these people will do on our behalf.
- There is a new promotional brochure available for use by anyone wishing to promote orienteering to individuals or groups. We have 3000 printed so please make use of them. Thanks to Bert Elson for organising this new brochure.
