The 2015 Tasmanian School orienteering Championships was today conducted on the Lieemunetta map west of the southern midlands hamlet of Dysart by Hobart’s Wellington Ranges club. The cool, overcast conditions made for ideal orienteering conditions on terrain that challenged competitors yet allowed for fast running when confident of navigation. Fourteen schools were represented in the championships to contest individual age class divisions and the team trophies for combined primary schools, secondary girls aggregate and secondary boys aggregate.
In the primary schools division, Summerdale Primary retained their title by the barest of margins from Waimea Heights Primary with St Michaels Collegiate taking third place. In the Secondary Girls division, Launceston Church Grammar School were a comfortable first from Collegiate with St Patricks College in third place. In the Secondary Boys division it was an impressive win by Taroona High from The Hutchins School with The Friends School filling out the top three.
Today’s championships was also the first of three selection races for the 2015 Australian Schools Championships to be held in conjunction with the Australian Orienteering Championships carnival in and around Ballarat, Victoria in late September - early October. The next selection race will be the state-wide competition on the Stags Head map north of Lower Marshes in the Midlands on April 19. This event will also be the culmination of the Easter Holiday junior camp for all interested Grade 7-12 students. Further details can be found about the camp by clicking here.
