Orienteering Tasmania today applauded the decision of the Tasmanian Planning Commission to disallow an amendment to the Clarence City Council Planning Scheme that would have allowed a 200 dwelling village and two golf courses to be built on the Pittwater peninsula.

President, Warwick Moore, said that orienteers throughout the state, and across Australia, looked forward to continue to race and train in the complex dunes that form the only international standard orienteering terrain in southern Tasmania.

“This outstanding recreational area has been used for over 40 years for local, Australian and International orienteering events and has been crucial in the development of Tasmania’s best orienteers, including former World Champion, Hanny Allston” he said.

He was backed by Christine Marshall, former Australian Team Captain.  “This is a welcome result for the current and future orienteers who train and compete on the extensive area of naturally formed dunes” she said.

While welcoming the result of the hearing, Mr Moore said that the Commission acknowledged that horse riding and orienteering would be significantly impacted by the recently granted permit for a golf course, which would “essentially eliminate the most desirable areas for orienteering use.”  Mr Moore indicated that Orienteering Tasmania would continue to work to ensure that, if the proposed single course is to be built, it is located in such a way that it does not impinge on the outstanding orienteering terrain.  “The area is freely accessible for recreational use at the moment and should remain so” he said.
