Outstanding local talent, including interstate entries keen to get a jump on their opponents at the forth-coming international competition in January, will be amongst the more than 110 entrants at the Tasmanian g Individual and Relay Orienteering Championships to be held at St Helens this weekend (Sept.13-14).

From January 2-11, 2015 the international series of events, the 2015 Oceania Orienteering Championships and World Cup Round,  with 3 events in Launceston,  Avoca, Swansea and Coles Bay, will conclude in St Helens with the signature Oceania Long Distance Championships and World Cup Long Distance Championships. The Tasmanian Championships this week end will be held on similar terrain at St Helens.

The top competition will be in the Mens 21A and Womens 17-20A which both feature  junior representatives from the successful Australian Junior World Orienteering Championship (JWOC) team who competed in Bulgaria in July, Anna Dowling from Hobart in the Womens 17-20 field and brothers Brodie and Ashley Nankervis competing in the senior Mens 21 this weekend.

Both fields are particularly strong. Brodie and Ashley will come up against two father and son combinations in Jarrah and Jemery Day from Hobart and Ian and Geoff Lawford from Victoria together with veteran competitor Jim Russell from Bendigo. Anna will meet a talented field of Tasmania junior women as well as Nicola Blatchford from Newcastle.

In the Womens 21A Hanny Allston will return to the state following her successful debut as  coach of  the successful Australian team at JWOC in Bulgaria earlier this year and returned to competition at the senior level with the Australian team at the World Orienteeing Championships in Italy.

Other fields to be watched are the battle for W50 between Jenny Bourne, and international gold medallist from Victoria and Australia representatives from Hobart and Launceston Christine Brown and Christine Marshall and  Sue Hancock from Hobart.

Mens 60 will see the ongoing struggle between Bert Elson and David Marshall of the Australopers Club of Hobart, and the return of Darryl Smith will announce the resumption of competition with team Mike Dowling from Wellington Ranges in the Mens 55.

All four Tasmanian clubs are represented with age classes ranging from under 10 to Mans and Womens 75 classes. The oldest competitor on the day will be 91 year old Joyce Jones of Hobart sharing the 2 km  Course 9 with the under 10’s competitors.
