Saturday Orienteering Series, June 14-28, August 2-16. Starts from 1.30 to 3.00, Courses close at 4.00
It may not have the global following of the Tour de France but a group of juniors are hoping that the Esk Valley Orienteering Club’s Tour de Trevallyn will bring out the crowds to participate rather than to spectate.
An initiative of EVOC’s older juniors, the aim is to have their own version of the French cycling classic but this time on foot and closer to home and open to public participation.
The venue for all events will be Trevallyn Reserve, the first part of the series on Saturdays from June 14 -28 and then August 2-16. Starts are from 1.30 to 3.00, with courses closing at 4.00.
The Trevallyn Reserve on Launceston’s doorstep provides a wide variety of terrain, perfect for local orienteering at all levels from newcomers to experienced orienteers. With plenty of interlocking tracks and open bushland as well as more complex terrain suitable for cross country navigation, the series at Trevallyn Reserve provides the public with an opportunity to explore the unknown areas beyond the more familiar public picnic and BBQ areas with a map in hand.
In keeping with the Tour de France theme on each of the three competitive courses there will be a weekly winner’s jersey for both the King of the Hill and Sprint legs and an overall winner’s yellow jersey, as well as series winners in each of these categories. Cumulative times on the best five out of six events will determine the overall winners on each course. Prizes will revolve around all things French, chocolat, croissant, tarte au citron etc
The Long Course (5-6 kms) and Medium Course (3-3.5 kms) will be moderate to hard in navigational difficulty, with the Short Course from 1.5-2 kms and easy navigation suitable for newcomers.
The Tour de Trevallyn will move around the Trevallyn Reserve, with each of the six events beginning from a different start point. The first event starts in the centre of the Reserve, at the car park at the junction of Reatta Rd and Duck Reach Rd, signed to the Village Green and Hoo Hoo BBQ Hut. Trevallyn Dam picnic ground and Aquatic Point are two of the better known starting points, while Havenbrook Drive off Reatta Rd provides another.
Members of the public including family groups are welcome to participate, with only casual registration required on the day
Participants can enter either single events or register for the whole series at discounted rates of 5 events for the 6 event series will be available with generous family maximum rates.
