Day two of the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships saw the Tasmanian team move up from its 3rd place at the end of day 1 to finish second overall. The competition, which has been held in forests 30 km east of Canberra, involved an individual competition on Tuesday and the team relays on Wednesday.
While a national team from New Zealand also took part in the competition and finished first overall, the new Zealanders’ results were not counted in the Australian Schools Competition.
Tasmania’s best individual results were a second Australian in the senior boys from Launceston’s Ashley Nankervis and a third Australian in the senior girls from Hobart’s Anna Dowling. The state’s strength lay not in outstanding individual performances as much as a solid run from each of the three scoring team members in each of the four classes.
This flowed through into day 2 where, in the relay competition, Tasmania placed third in all four classes, sufficient for it to move up from its 3rd placing on day 1 to take out 2nd state overall behind Victoria. Queensland placed 3rd after an ACT team was disqualified from 1 class for registering at an incorrect check point, with NSW, SA and WA in the remaining places.
