This is a multi-stage sprint style event being held over two days. You need to enter in advance via Eventor by Tuesday 4 February (entries are now open here).
You will have fun, orienteering at speed around places you don’t often go. The 4 stages involve courses that will take winners anywhere from 8 - 15 minutes. So you will need to make quick decisions and run smoothly. Here are the 4 stages:
Saturday 8 February: 5pm. Map: Battery Point
Sunday 9 February: 9 am. Map: Glenorchy Primary School. | 12 noon. Map: The Friends School. | 4pm. Map: Domain House.
Bonus: Monday 10 February there’s a morning of technical training at the sand dunes at Pittwater being organised by Kilian. Find out about this here. Plus, if you're doing the Hobart Shorts, Kilian is now running a model event in Hobart's northern suburbs first thing Saturday 8 February. Email Kilian to attend either/both sessions! You don't have to be doing the Hobart Sprints to train at Pittwater.
Here's how the Hobart Sprints work:
- All 4 stages form one event so you can not enter separate stages. However you can just not turn up to a stage (in which case you’ll be out of the running for the overall competition).
- The entry fee for club members will be $18, and juniors/concession $12. The fees for non members are $26/16. This is for all 4 stages regardless of how many you actually run.
- The event is being organised by Will Whittington and he’s doing things a little bit differently to our usual events.
- For a start, there is no choice when it comes to what course you will run. But there will actually be 2 courses at each stage, with one a bit longer.
- After entries have closed, the field will be split into roughly 2 groups. This will be at Will’s discretion based roughly on your speed over the past year. This is being done to balance the number of people between the two courses, and to get people starting and finishing as quickly as possible. As you will appreciate, there’s a lot of work to do to move between maps. Plus – this should make some pretty interesting racing.
- Start times will be allocated, and the first starts will happen at the above times. Start intervals will depend on how many people enter and will be either 30 seconds or 1 minute.
- There will be prizes for the first male and female on each course over the whole event.
- SI boxes will be used. But otherwise, the event is being run with minimal equipment (no tents, banners, finish chutes etc).
- You will need to listen carefully at every briefing for any things to watch out for. As with all events, we need to respect the landowner’s wishes and so – there’ll definitely be no running across any garden beds!
And here are the full details you need to be on top of:
Toilets: There will not be a loo on site. Instead, find the nearest public toilets. Google!
Water: Bring your own!
Plastic bags: Bring your own!
SI Air: This is an SI Air event. But you can use your slower SI stick. If you only have a P Card let us know. You don't have enough memory! So we'll allocate your an SI stick for FREE. Email Will (preferably before you enter).
